Michigan Motorcycle Accident Lawyer Shares Biker Safety Video

Our Michigan motorcycle accident lawyers recently viewed a new video on motorcycle safety that is circulating the internet. The short video sends such a powerful message without a single spoken word. We realize the seriousness of not taking necessary safety precautions while riding a motorcycle and want to share this video with you.

The video “Who Looks Out For You When You Ride?” depict a fairy godmother saving a biker who is injured in a motorcycle accident portraying the message that unless you have a fairy godmother no one will be able to save or protect you from a motorcycle accident besides yourself.

Watch this video!

The message the video gets across is a very powerful and truthful meaning. If you are seriously injured in a motorcycle accident, no one will be able to save you. You can however, save yourself, if you take the necessary safety precautions before getting on the bike for a ride.

Some of these safety tips include wearing an approved helmet that effectively prevents disabling and fatal head injuries, practicing hard braking techniques regularly (front and back break together), wearing bright, solid colored riding gear to ensure others will see you on the road, and making sure your riding boots are waterproof in case you get stuck riding in the rain.

Michigan Motorcycle Road Safety

Our Michigan motorcycle accident lawyers represent bikers injured in Michigan motorcycle accidents.  Our investigations show that a majority of these accidents are due to negligent motorists and truck drivers and not due to errors by the bikers.  It is important that drivers in our state pay special attention to the rights of bikers.

Michigan motorists should be noticing Michigan Motorcycle Road Safety warnings on electronic signs this month because May is Michigan Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

On behalf of the citizens of Michigan, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed the month of May 2009 as “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month” to remind motorists of the seasonal return of motorcycle enthusiasts to Michigan’s highways.

Motorists are encouraged to always be aware of motorcycles, especially at intersections, when performing lane changes or passing other vehicles.  Due to their smaller size, motorcycles may be easily overlooked in the traffic flow, especially if traffic is heavy or the driver is in a hurry.  Motorists need to be especially alert at intersections and when making a left turn to insure that a motorcycle is not coming straight through.  Motorists need to share the road and remember that a motorcycle is entitled to a full lane.  Keeping a safe distance from the motorcycle allows the motorcycle operator the opportunity to maneuver the motorcycle to avoid road hazards or other traffic conditions.

Office of Highway Safety Planning Director Michael L. Prince said that as the number of motorcycle riders grows both nationally and in the state, OHSP has increased its support for training and education efforts in 2007. Motorcycle fatalities in the state fell from 122 in 2005 to 114 last year, a 7 percent decline. But, he cautioned that the job is far from over.

The awareness program is designed ot help reduce the risk of Michigan Motorcycle Accidents.  Unfortunately, accidents can and do happen. So it is also important to carry the right insurance coverage on your bike if you are in an accident. What To Do After A Michigan Motorcycle Accident

After a Michigan motorcycle accident, there are several things that every biker should do to protect their legal rights.  You should be aware that a negligent motorist who causes the accident and his insurance company will attempt to blame you for the accident and your injuries, even though you were not at fault in the accident.  Hopefully, your injuries will be minor and you can take the following steps to protect yourself and your rights.

Here are some important tips:

  • Ask someone to call ambulance if anyone needs medical assistance.
  • While you are at the accident scene, exchange important information like name, address, telephone number and driving license number; also get the vehicle registration number of every vehicle involved and the insurance information of every other driver.
  • Remember to write down the make and model of the vehicles involved in the crash.
  • Identify witnesses of accident and see if they are willing to make a statement. In case no one is willing to make a statement, write down their cars’ license plate.
  • Call the police or get someone to call them without any delay.  Even if you do not feel like you were seriously injured, it is still important to make a complete report.  Make sure that the police get your version of the accident and not just the version of the other driver.
  • If you have a digital camera or can use your cell phone to take pictures, take photos of the vehicles in the accident, including the license plates numbers of every vehicle.  A negligent motorist may attempt to give incorrect information and this is a great way to prove exactly who was in the accident.
  • Report the accident to your insurance company and obtain your claim number.  Many insurance companies later try to claim they were never put on notice of the accident and therefore they do not have to pay benefits.
  • Take photographs of your injuries.
  • If you are injured, follow up with your doctors immediately.  If you delay in seeking treatment but later on learn you had a serious injury, the insurance company will claim you were not really injured because you did not seek prompt medical attention.

If there is a serious bike accident, the at-fault driver or the insurance agent may try to trick the injured motorcyclist into forfeiting some of his or her rights.  To make sure this does not happen, remember:

  • Avoid any argument or fight with the at-fault driver
  • Never sign on any document without your lawyer reviewing it first
  • Never send your motorcycle for repairs, until your attorney has it  inspected and photographed
  • You are not answerable to the insurance agent or attorney who is representing the at-fault driver. Do not make any comments or statements describing the motorcycle accident.  They may try to trick you into signing a release and forfeiting your right to sue forever.
